Star Wars

The new Star Wars movie comes out tonight, and I am going to see it! My boyfriend wanted me to watch all of the movies leading up to this one. Keep in mind, the new one is the 8th movie so that’s a lot of movies. I have seen all of the movies before, but it has been a long time so he wanted me to refresh my memory before the new one came out. He really loves Star Wars…so we watched movies 4-7. And actually watching the movies reminded me of why I used to love Star Wars so much.

As a kid I used to have a purple lightsaber, and my brother had a blue one. We used to pretend that we were Jedis and would fight one another all the time. I have a lot of fond memories of those times. Watching the movies made me once again wish that being a Jedi was a thing. If it was something real, I would definitely sign up for it! Unfortunately it is not, so I will just have to watch other people on a screen live out my secret (or not so secret) dream. But I am super excited to see the new movie now!

May the force be with you,

This is a picture of a print that I bought a few years ago by Iris Scott. I typically am not really a fan of art, but when I came across her artwork I instantly loved it. She uses really vibrant colors in most of her paintings, and I love color. I started to read about her and came across the fact that all of her work is done through finger painting. She uses surgical gloves and oil paint to create her work. I could not believe that all of her artwork was created by finger painting. I thought she was a pretty unique artist, and so I wanted to be able to buy one of her pieces. However, all of her original pieces have been sold already and are too expensive for me. The original painting of the print that I got sold for $6,500. Luckily though she believes in making art affordable for other people, and so she makes her prints easily accessible. So I bought this one, and I love it so much!

What I love about this painting is that it paints such a magical picture of fall. I can picture myself as the girl in the painting. I can feel the breeze in the air, I can see the leaves swirling around me, and I see the bright colors surrounding me. I can even smell the fall smells. I love that this painting can allow me to do all of that.

So for this, I can appreciate art.

Christmas Town

Well, I have been sick the past few days. I didn’t particularly want to do anything yesterday because I wasn’t feeling great, but it was one of the interns’ birthdays and we already made plans to go to Busch Gardens for Christmas Town. So I sucked it up and went anyways! We all had a great time. We first stopped in Williamsburg to grab some ice cream for Lindsay’s birthday. I got 2 giant scoops of ice cream, and I thought I was going to explode after eating the whole thing. Then we were off to Busch Gardens!

Almost all of the girls love roller coasters just like me, which was amazing. There were only 2 roller coasters open, but we rode those ones about three times each! We also went on other rides for fun and of course saw all of the beautiful lights that were displayed. To end our night we grabbed dinner at Chick-fil-a where we sang happy birthday to Lindsay with the cow.

I still feel terrible today, but at least I got to enjoy last night!

Behold by Hillsong has become one of my favorite songs recently. I love worshipping with this song, and I think the words have a powerful message. I think the song tells a clear story so I will leave the lyrics here for you to think about.

Behold the Father’s heart
The mystery He lavishes on us
As deep cries out to deep
Oh, how desperately He wants us
The things of earth stand next to Him
Like a candle to the sun
Unfailing Father
What compares to His great love
Behold His holy Son
The Lion and the Lamb given to us
The Word became a man
That my soul should know its Savior
Forsaken for the sake of all mankind
Salvation is in His blood
Jesus Messiah The righteous died for love
It wasn’t over For He is the risen one
Then sings my soul
Then sings my soul
How great Your love is
How great Your love is
Behold I have a friend
The Spirit breathing holy fire within
My ever present help
Speaking truth when I can’t find it
Light up this broken heart and light my way
‘Til my time on earth is done
Oh, Holy Spirit Breathe in me like Kingdom come

Oh, Holy Spirit Let Your work in me be done

I am struck by how great God’s love is for us. He loves us so deeply, and our response to Him should be to praise His name with all that we are.

God’s Provision

We have had a class the past two days on God’s provision in missions. This class is very timely considering that I really want to go on a short-term trip in the spring that I will need to be raising support for. I would be gone for a month and would be traveling to Northern Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and then Los Angeles. It would require quite a bit of money, and in these instances I often feel a little bit nervous about everything working out. I have to remind myself of God’s word and promises of provision to those that follow Him.

Philippians 4:19- “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Matthew 21:22- “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

John 15:7- “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

Matthew 6: 31-33- “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Hudson Taylor- “God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply.”

If God leads me places, then He will also provide. He cares for His children and is faithful.

Homeland in Richmond

IMG_1524The show Homeland is filming in Richmond, and I have not seen them filming at all so far. I don’t typically have any luck with these kinds of things, but today I got to see the show filming right around the corner from my internship!!!!!!!! Cue the excitement and minor freak outs. Although I did not get to see Claire Danes (Carrie Mathieson on the show), I was able to see Mandy Patinkin, which was just as great! I first watched him as Gideon on Criminal Minds, and then saw him as one of the main characters, Saul Berenson, on Homeland. I enjoy the show, and if you have not tried it out then you should. I am hoping that I will get to catch more glimpses of the cast before they leave Richmond…maybe just see Claire Danes…that would be cool.

Here is a little tidbit from the first season of a conversation between the two main characters.

Saul Berenson: What were his exact words, please?
Carrie Mathison: “An American prisoner of war has been turned.”
Saul Berenson: He said this in English?
Carrie Mathison: Yes. He whispered it into my ear right before the guards pulled me away.
Saul Berenson: And when he used the expression “turned”…
Carrie Mathison: He meant turned – working for Abu Nazir.
Saul Berenson: Why am I just hearing about this now?
Carrie Mathison: Because until ten minutes ago, I didn’t know there were any POWs still alive in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Who am I Becoming?

We were asked this question today, and honestly it is not one that I have thought about for a while. As I began to think about this question, a lot of things came to mind about who I hope I am becoming. Here are some of my thoughts:

  • A worship leader
  • A person who loves more
  • A more giving and less selfish person
  • A person that puts other people above themselves
  • A person that fully enjoys life
  • A person that notices the little things
  • A person that loves what God loves
  • A persons that is obedient to God
  • A person with more compassion and grace
  • A person that wants to share Jesus with unreached people groups
  • A person that is continually growing and learning

I know I have grown tremendously in some of these areas, and in some of them I still have a long way to go. But at the end of the day I want to become a person that puts who God is on display. It is an ongoing and lifelong process, but I will continue to work towards becoming that kind of person.

It’s Beginning to Feel a lot Like Christmas

It’s December and that means that all of the Christmas activities can commence!! YAY!!! This is my absolute favorite time of the year. I love the music, the lights, the presents…everything. On Friday, Richmond had its annual tree lighting ceremony. They lit up the city and a big tree downtown. There was music and food and so many people. I went with people in my small group, and I enjoyed it all.IMG_1481

Then on Saturday there was the Christmas parade. I have honestly never seen the parade even though I have lived in Richmond for the past 23 years. It was going to come right by our apartment window so I figured why not!? I was a little skeptical that it was going to be lame, but it was actually pretty good. There were people dancing, floats, marching band people, and all sorts of characters. I watched it with my roommates from our window in my PJs, and it was great. I am trying to participate in as many Christmas activities as I possibly can this season to make the most of this time of year. I am off to a good start! IMG_1504
